Civil War Day

May 19th 2023, although it will feel like 1864.

“Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.”

Join Us For Civil War Day!

Join us for a thrilling journey back in time as we explore the monumental conflict that split America in two, dividing states and families alike. At Riley's Farm, our vast fields and orchards provide the perfect backdrop for an immersive Civil War Day experience, led by our team of knowledgeable living historians. Through hands-on activities and interactive demonstrations, your group will gain a deeper understanding of what life was like during the Civil War era and the impact it had on the nation as a whole.

The day kicks off with a lively town meeting, where your group will be transported back to the Maryland State Assembly, debating the crucial issues of the day and ultimately deciding whether to secede, join the Union, or remain neutral. With all sides given the chance to argue their points, this is an exciting and educational way to kick off the day.

After the assembly, you will have the opportunity to interact with Confederate and Union soldiers, who will share stories about their home states and the challenges they faced during the war. Through activities like regiment drills, visits to the surgeon's infirmary, and lessons in 19th-century etiquette, you'll gain a deeper appreciation for the realities of life during the Civil War.

As the day progresses, you'll visit various camp posts, each offering a different perspective on the conflict. And, after working up an appetite, you'll be treated to a soldier's ration of lemonade, cornbread, cheese, an apple, and dried beef. Additional food purchases are available at our Packing Shed bakery to supplement the ration.

Finally, the day culminates in a large-scale mock battle, reenacting the Battle of Malvern Hill. Armed with muskets, your students will fight for their home and land as Southerners, or uphold the Union and fight to keep the country together as Northerners. Led into battle by one of our commanding officers, this is a thrilling and unforgettable way to bring history to life.
